Job Description

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. At the 15th Conference of the Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP15) in Montreal in December 2022, the Parties ratified a landmark agreement known as the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM-GBF). The KM-GBF sets a clear pathway to halt and reverse the loss of biodiversity across the world, framed by 4 goals for 2050 and 23 action-oriented targets to be achieved by 2030. National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) are the main instruments for implementing the CBD and achieving the KM-GBF at the national level. UNEP is taking bold action to support countries to develop, revise, increase ambition and deliver on their NBSAPs bringing together countries, institutions, and non-state actors, with a Whole of Government and a Whole of Society approach. UNEP is developing a new area of work to strengthen global, regional, and national ambition and political support on NBSAPs.
